Studio peake x christoper farr

It was such a joy to welcome everyone into the studio to celebrate the launch of our new rug designs with Christopher Farr, surrounded by friends, collaborators, and the many people who have supported Studio Peake along the way.

From the beginning, I knew I wanted the design to feel structured, while also exploring contrast and colour in a bold, playful way. The year before, I’d purchased a colourful Gunta Stölzl striped Turkish flatweave rug from Matt and Dorothy for my own home. I absolutely love it: it’s full of vibrant colours that somehow balance and clash beautifully all at once. That rug stayed in my mind throughout the design process.

I began looking at the strong geometric works of Piet Mondrian, and started experimenting with stripes and rectangles, gradually building up a composition that felt geometric but lively and harmonious. Once the overall structure was in place, I moved into the world of colour, creating countless coloured rectangles to test placement, contrast and tonal balance.

That process eventually brought me into the Christopher Farr shop for several days, immersing myself in their extraordinary library of wool tufts and working carefully through combinations until we found the right palette for sampling. I knew I wanted the rugs to be made in Christopher Farr’s Afghan weave, as I’ve always loved the subtle variation of colour that runs through the weave—those gentle horizontal striations that soften each block of shade and give the rugs such depth and texture.

In the end, we developed five colourways, all of which were sampled. Matt and Dorothy selected two designs for the final collection, and we are now continuing to explore additional combinations as bespoke options for upcoming projects.

This collaboration has been such a fun, creative, and rewarding experience. I’ve loved every minute!

A heartfelt thank you to Matt, Dorothy, and the entire team at Christopher Farr Cloth, and of course to the incredibly talented weavers in Afghanistan, whose extraordinary craftsmanship brought these designs to life.

It’s a true pleasure to see the rugs here in the studio, and to celebrate everyone who made them possible.
